Kleine Kammermusik plays Kleine Kammermusik
Music in the Pavilion, Kislak Center, UPenn Library, Philadelphia

Our group takes its name from a set of pieces Georg Philipp Telemann published and dedicated to four oboists that had played in an ensemble at Dresden court known as the Petite Musique de Chamber—or in German Kleine Kammermusik. On this program we play excerpts from these charming pieces.  Telemann was sufficiently proud of them to expand them later by adding inner parts and an overture to each. An edition of these recently discovered works is found in the UPenn library. The result is in line with the type of music that oboe bands (mixed ensembles of oboes, bassoons and string instruments) would have played across Europe. We will demonstrate the versatility of this combination with ceremonial marches, stylish chamber music by Fasch and a suite of movements from Purcell’s Fairy Queen found in a set of part books that may have belonged to the British Queen Charlotte’s personal band. This is a work that legendary conductor Leopold Stokowsky programmed with the Philadelphia Orchestra; his (quite different) arrangement is preserved in the Kislak Centre.
